Stephen Ministries
Hurting? Struggling? Discouraged? Stressed? Confused? Broken?
Stephen Ministers are ready to care.
Christ Caring for People through People.
What Is Stephen Ministry?
Our congregation's Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.
A Stephen Minister Is...
- A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting.
- A congregation member with gifts for caregiving, who was carefully selected to serve in this role.
- A lay person who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care.
- A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages.
- Someone who will "be there" for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there's a need.
Stephen Ministry Is Your Ministry
You play an important role in our Stephen Ministry. Here's what you can do:
- Pray for God to bring hope and healing to hurting people through our Stephen Ministry.
- Accept care from a Stephen Minister during your time of need. God doesn't expect you to bear your burdens alone.
- Tell a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is hurting about our Stephen Ministry.
- If you are a good listener and a compassionate person, prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister.

Stephen Ministry – A Lay Ministry
Stephen Ministry is based on the idea that all Christians are ministers. The responsibility for passing on God’s love is for all Christians, not just for a chosen few. God has given us all gifts for ministry and called us to put those gifts to use. Stephen Ministry is a place where people with special gifts for caring ministry can use those gifts to bring Christ’s love to people in need.
We have many needs for care in our congregation and community: people experiencing divorce, grief, a terminal illness, any loss, relocation, an empty nest, retirement, hospitalization, loneliness, and many other stresses or challenges. Often needy people suffer silently and do not request or receive the level of care they really need. With 5 pastors for a congregation of more than 3,000 members, you can see why it would be impossible for our pastors to meet every single need of every single person. Stephen Ministry expands the care CLUMC can offer by equipping members to provide extended Christian care.
If you would like to join this ministry in caring for others, please contact Jean Gates at 281-486-4445, or Mildred Wilson at 281-488-7242. We plan to begin a training class in January. Your application will be screened and treated confidentially and carefully.
